Brian Healy wins 2016 Highfield CC Final
Philip McSweeney (1 seed) and Brian Healy (2 seed) contested the 2016 HF CC final. Brian won 3/2 with a dramatic 12/10 in the 5th finish in a high quality match.

A very focussed Brian settled quickly and took the first game at ease 11/2 (7 mins).

There was an immediate response from Philip in the 2nd game. Both players now playing good squash but it was Philip who opened the gap moving from 4-all to 8/4. Brian tried hard to recover but Philip took the 2nd game 11/7 (11mins).

Brian took the initiative in the 3rd racing to an 8/2 lead. Some features of the match were long punishing rallies, great retrieving by both players and Brian’s effective use of the lob to vary the pace of the games. Brian’s six point lead in the 3rd was too much for Philip to close and Brian took the 3rd game 11/7 (9 mins).

Philip increased the pace from the start of the 4th game and with Brian appearing to tire Philip drove on to take the game 11/4 (7 mins).

A full house was now eagerly looking forward to the final 5th game. With very little between both players all through the match it was Brian who started stronger in the 5th to lead at 5/1 and then at 9/5. With the match drifting from him, Philip found new energy reserves and showed great fight to win five rallies in succession and get to match ball at 10/9. Crucially, Brian won the next rally to take  the match to a tie-break. Another gut wrenching rally saw Brian on match ball at 11/10 and despite Philip’s best efforts Brian was not to be denied on this occasion and the took the match 12/10 in the 5th. (14 mins).

Brian becomes HF club champion for the first time. A proud moment also for Lee (Brian’s father & coach).

Congrats to both players for a terrific contest that was in keeping with the great tradition of this competition.
